Connecting People, Creating Tomorrow

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE, has a long tradition in conserving and preserving the environment. It has been implementing Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) policies and programmes to address environmental and sustainability challenges.

Humanity is confronting the Triple Planetary Crisis of Climate Change, Nature & Biodiversity loss, and Pollution & Waste. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres declared “Code Red for Humanity” in 2021 during the release of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. WEEC 2024 is a response to act decisively and step-up EE and ESD ambition.

Abu Dhabi takes the privilege of hosting the EE and ESD sector community during in the 12th WEEC under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafrah Region of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi.

WEEC is the largest international congress on EE and ESD. The theme “Connecting People, Creating Tomorrow” reaffirms that EE and ESD have a significant role to play in humanity’s transformation to act for a sustainable future.

During the period 2023–2025, the UAE is hosting several important multilateral environmental events—UNFCCC COP 28 (Dubai, Nov–Dec 2023), and the IUCN World Conservation Congress (Abu Dhabi, Oct 2025), with WEEC occurring neatly in between in early 2024.
