ABOUT ead-symbol EAD

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) stands as the beacon of environmental conservation in the emirate, vigorously protecting its air, water, and rich biodiversity.

EAD’s mandate was initially established in 1996, when the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA) was created by emiri decree. ERWDA built upon the pioneering work of conservationists from the National Avian Research Center, which in turn, was established in 1989 in response to the desire of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to preserve the emirate’s cultural heritage and in particular the traditions of sustainable hunting. EAD has come a long way over the last 25 years and has matured into the Middle East's premier environmental regulator.

Renowned for monumental feats such as establishing the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network and championing innovative conservation strategies, EAD seamlessly blends past achievements with future aspirations. EAD’s unwavering commitment ensures that Abu Dhabi continues to flourish from a harmonious balance with its natural environment.

CONSERVATION plant

Abu Dhabi is a mosaic of unique geographies, from its inland mountains and rocky wadis, undulating sand dunes and verdant oases, its unique coastal salt flats and expansive mangroves, to its extensive sea grass beds and coral reefs, Abu Dhabi is home to an impressive biodiversity. Close to 4,000 species have been recorded across the emirate, including the world's notable populations of dugongs and Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins, which thrive here.

These treasures find protection in the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network, with regular discoveries of new species, like the Spider Hunting Wasp at Al Wathba Wetland. Our commitment is to informed, evidence-based conservation for Abu Dhabi's rich biodiversity.

ENVIRONMENTAL environmental-history HISTORY

Founded in 1996, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) was built on Abu Dhabi's deep-rooted connection to its natural landscapes. With a history that predates the oil boom of the late 1950s, EAD balances modern development with the preservation of the emirate's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. As the agency navigates the complexities of rapid growth, its core mission remains steadfast: to champion a sustainable future for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
